‘How the magic of Harry Potter was brought to life on the Princess Theatre’s stage’

With the constantly blink-and-you’ll-miss-it magic tricks, wands that really appear to spark spells, dazzling performances and a no-expense-spared stage design, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child set a new gold standard for stage performance in Australia. To highlight why this page-to-stage production is one you simply cannot miss, news.com.au will interview the head of stage design, head of costume design and illusion consultant to celebrate the effort that’s gone into the making of it. In this feature piece, we’ll highlight how this inspired and disciplined team delivers the most eye-boggling illusions and seamless stage design experience, every single day in Melbourne, without a visible wire or trap door insight. Staircases move with incredible fluidity, suitcases transform and the entire stage appears to suck itself into time warps - have to see to believe it.

The design
In bringing to light the incredible transformation of Melbourne’s Princess Theatre and to pay tribute to one of the worlds most beloved children's books, the design needed showcase a range of iconic symbols from both the books and the movie series to characterise and Identify the tone and style of the article and to connect the reader with its historical history.

‘The magic of skin to skin explained’

Have you ever wondered why the scent of your newborn makes you a little bit giddy? Ever catch yourself inhaling them and wonder why? In this custom-built Premium Native article, we will reveal just how important the senses are when it comes to maternal bonding - for both baby and mum. We'll speak to a clinical psychologist about how a newborn’s brain development depends on having positive sensory stimulation. At its core, the article will dig deeper into the importance of skin-to-skin contact for both parents and how prioritising this makes the baby feel safe and therefore thrive. We'll also empower parents to speak up about it to their midwife, and what partners can do to advocate during labour and beyond to ensure it happens. The piece will include biological facts about how dopamine is released when a mother smells and touches her baby, and touch on how she can care for her newborn's skin.

The design
To uncover the magic connection between parent and newborn the design needed to capture the importance of skin-to-skin contact and inform the reader of the scientific reasons this process is so important.

To characterise this, i’ve gone with a soft and gentle colour palette with illustrations that serve the tone and feel of the article.

As a nod to the scientific reasons why skin-to-skin contact is so important, two hotspot interactives were developed to break down the individual benefits of skin-to-skin contact for mum and newborn.

Content overview
‘Rear review: Haval Jolion’

In this review-style article, a news.com.au writer will share the performance and aesthetic of the Haval H6. Speaking to the Millennial female target market, they’ll highlight why the Jolion is perfectly suited to the demands of a fast-paced inner city and adventurous weekends away. Written first person, this article will share what it’s like to be behind the wheel in the Jolion, from a comfort, performance and tech perspective.

The design
Embracing Melbourne's vibrant artistic culture the design needed to be bold, loud and vibrant – connecting with millennials that are after a smart, affordable and tech pack SUV.

The colour pallet chosen gives the reader a first-person perspective into Melbourne's underground street art and graffiti scene, contributing to the city’s vibrant society and culture.

To specifically highlight the tech features available a set of informative flip cards was used as the interactive element of the article, giving the reader an in-depth look at Haval's new tech-packed SUV.

When good people do bad things’

Whenever there’s an atrocity caused by someone, friends of the culprit usually express complete bafflement that a person who seemed so kind and normal could do something so horrific. Mr Inbeween’s Ray Shoesmith is one of those people. He’s is an all-around ‘good guy’. He’s a devoted single father to unicorn obsessed Brittany; a good friend to his mates, a romantic suitor to Ally. But he’s also an assassin. And he isn't an assassin wrestling with his demons - he’s good at his job and he does it with a smile. In this feature, news.com.au will explore humanity’s capacity to do bad things, despite being inherently ‘good’. Speaking with experts and academics, we’ll attempt to unknot the knottiness of people who lead otherwise good lives but engage in darkness.

The design
To describe in detail whether humans are inherently good or evil and question if bad behaviour is an unavoidable part of the human experience, the design needed to provide the reader with a firsthand look into good and evil.

To define an overall theme, I needed to use two distinct colours that divided the design into good and evil.

To further illustrate the difference between the two, I created a simple toggle switch interactive, where the user could read the article from the perspective of good and evil.
